The Entry/Exit System (EES) and the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) are due to be launched this year for travelers entering Europe. Here are the latest updates.
Entry/Exit System (EES):
If you are a UK national with rights under the Withdrawal Agreement, you will be exempt from EES registration. Provided that you have the correct documentation. In France, documents that allow exemption include all forms of Withdrawal Agreement residency permits, including 5-year, 10-year and permanent residency permits. Any other valid residency permit issued by France or any other EU member state will also mean that you are exempt.
The EES will register visa-free and visa-required travellers entering Europe for a short stay. No action will be required from travellers before they start their trip, as registration will be done at the external border of any of the 29 European countries using the system. The countries in question are the 29 Schengen countries.
It will record personal information, travel document details, biometric data (such as fingerprints and facial images), and the date and place of entry and exit.
Registration on the EES will be done every time travellers cross external borders and will replace the manual stamping of passport
As of February 2025, the EES is not yet operational; its implementation is expected later in 2025.

European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS):
ETIAS is currently not in operation and will not start in the first half of 2025. No action is required from travellers at this point. The European Union will inform about the start of ETIAS several months prior to its launch
ETIAS is an electronic travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers from over 30 countries, including the UK.
Once operational, travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before visiting most European countries for short stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The application will involve a €7 fee and will be valid for three years or until the traveler’s passport expires.
As of February 2025, ETIAS is not yet in operation and is scheduled to commence six months after the EES becomes operational.
No action is required from travelers at this point
