The cost of a ‘carte grise’ for a car imported from the UK

by Gerald Humphreys

Depending on the nature of your vehicle, you will have to pay several taxes to register your UK car.

• The regional tax: its amount is obtained by multiplying the rate of the tax per horsepower applicable in your region of residence. However, you will benefit from a partial or full exemption if you have imported a clean vehicle (electric, plug-in hybrid, etc.) or more than 10 years old.
• The tax on professional training in transport: calculated according to the PTAC (total authorized weight in charge), it only applies if you have imported a commercial vehicle from the UK. Its cost varies between 34 and 285 €.
• The ecological penalty: whether you have imported a new or used car from the UK, you are subject to the ecological penalty because it applies when a vehicle is first registered in France. Its amount depends on the CO2 emissions rate of your vehicle.
