Pass your driving test from 17 years old

It is now possible to pass your driving test in France from the age of 17 years old. You first need to pass the theory test ; this can be done from the age of 15 for a standard driving licence (Permis B) if you decide to learn via accompanied driving or from 16 years old if you choose to learn exclusively via an approved driving school. There are two ways to pass your test :

1) Accompanied driving (L’apprentissage anticipé de la conduit – AAC): You need to pass the theory test first (from the age of 15 ) and then pass a short course with an approved driving school. You can then continue learning to drive with someone who has had a licence for at least 5 years. You need to drive at least 3000 kms over a minimum of one year before you can then sit your driving test from the age of 17.If you then pass your test, the probationary period is reduced from 3 years to 2 years and your car insurance will generally be cheaper.

2) Driving School: You can choose to enrol with a driving school after having first passed your theory test (from the age of 16) and then learn to drive only with them for a minimum of 20 hours. You can then sit your driving test from the age of 17. If you pass your test this way the probationary driving period is 3 years.
