Obligatory composting in 2024

From the beginning of this year local communities are now obliged to have systems in place to recycle bio-waste, such as food waste or green waste such as grass clippings, leaves, and trimmings from shrubs, hedges etc.

Each community has the authority to organise this as it sees fit, whether that be via door-to-door collections or providing specialist compost bins for its inhabitants, either individually and /or strategically placed throughout the commune.

Please note that unless you have a green cone composter which can safely process all foodstuffs including meat and bones, only vegetable food waste should be put into your own private garden compost bins.

Animal products, such as meat, fish and dairy items should be placed in specialist communal bins to avoid encouraging pests. Your community should inform you as to how this will work in your area – some rural areas may not have the same systems in place as bigger villages and towns. You can read more about how the scheme works here.
