Exchanging your UK driving licence

by Gerald Humphreys

On Monday 28 June 2021 the French and British authorities reached an agreement on the continuity

of mutual recognition of valid driving licences which were issued prior to 1 January 2021.  So no need to exchange a British licence for a French one.  Similarly French drivers living in the U.K. with a French driving licence can continue using them there.

You have to exchange your British licence for a French driving licence if your driving licence has expired or is due to expire shortly, if you have committed a driving offence or in the case of loss or theft of your driving licence.  You also have to exchange your British driving licence for a French one if it was issued after 1 January 2021, but in this case you can drive for up to one year in France on your British licence from the date of your residency permit.  If you want to stay in France for more than a year you will have to exchange it for a French licence during the first year, but you won’t have to take a French driving test to do that.

Exchange requests must be submitted to the National Titles Agency secured site (ANTS) https://permisdeconduire.ants.gouv.fr

You will be issued with an “attestation de dépôt sécurisée” which you must use till your new driving licence arrives.
If you are on holiday in France or visiting for a short period for any other reason and are the holder of a UK photocard driving licence you can drive with this licence under the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic of 8 November 1968.  This also applies to French driving licence holders when travelling on holiday to the United Kingdom.
